Cover Art Effectiveness

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, with a book that is made up of mainly pictures you have to make the first one the most expressive it can possibly be. The cover art of any comic is meant to not only draw in anyone who see it and drawn in to reading it, it is also meant to captivate the potential reader. It may not even be a commonly known fact that the cover is done by a seperate artist who must take his time to complete the crucial illustration. Yes, the cover may at most times be the deciding factor for whether or not a reader will pick up the comic, based on whether the comic will contain what they feel like reading about. However, the artist and even the publishers will not always use it for just drawing in a reader, it is also a perfectly good opportunity to create a perfectly good works of art.

Part of the charm of comic book covers is that over time they have become not as direct as they used to be. Earlier on they would have the characters speak on the cover, and describe what would be going to happen in the story. Now they do something similar, but manage to still be vague with brightly colored images. The cover may have an interesting looking fight that includes a character that has not been seen in some time, something people want to see just see it. Yet, the actual story will have little to nothing to do with that art. We would be so lucky to see the special character in more than one small panel. Still however, that primary image was well worth seeing the artist take full advantage of their skills.

Publishers are always trying to promote different series and releases one way or another, one of the most impressive being the special covers. There are also the variant covers that are just full of artist expression. Some are just made to work  with special holographic paper. Others can be done to a fun theme that they know people will just like. Maybe you should not judge a book by its cover, but cover artist sure make it hard to stick to such a saying.
